Boka Primary School
201 pupils

Boka is an extremely remote, poor and arid area situated close to the Eastern boundary of Kora National Park, 7 hours drive Northeast of Nairobi and about 150 km from Garissa.

Families are mainly pastoralists - keeping cows and goats and moving around a lot.  In times of drought the nearby Boka Wells area becomes a gathering point for huge herds of livestock which threaten the ecology of the national park.

The primary school has been growing significantly and now operates from nursery to standard 8.  The girls' dropout rate is improving.

When TAS first started to support the school standards were very low and no child from the school had yet taken the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams but the headteacher, staff and parents were enthusiastic about the tasks ahead.  The younger generation of nomads are settling and seeing the need for a good education.  They want to see their school get better.

The trust was established in Oct 2010 and since then TAS has funded a girls' dormitory, kitchen and energy saving jikos, fencing, 2 female teachers, solar power in all the classrooms, desks, books, exam materials and a satellite phone.  The Nation Media Group have funded a library and staffroom.

The area is sometimes insecure but visits are enabled by Kenya Wildlife Service vehicles and personnel.
