Minutes from Trustees Meeting
08/02/2010

Present:

Minutes:

EBURRU SECONDARY SCHOOL TRUST Meeting on Mon 8th Feb 2010

Apologies from Val Corr. Those present Lilly, G.Marshall–Andrews, Evans, Charles, Solomon, Janet, David Morgan.  Johnnie Morris, a trustee from London was also present.

Minutes of 6th Jan 2010 read corrected and approved. Proposed by Solomon, seconded by David.

Matters arising. (all on agenda)

  1. Laboratory Construction.
    1. The roof was on, DM had been to the school to check on installation of services and discuss the fittings for the Lab.  Evans stated that they had no money left for the fittings and asked if TAS could help.  G.M.A. stated that funds were tight and suggested that we apply to local institutions for funding.  DM said he would approach Heritage and the flower farms.
  2. Proposals
    1. Sourcing for classrooms for 2 streams.

                                                             i.      Evans stated that the school inspectors had visited and as there was not a classroom built they would not be expected to take in a second stream in 2010.

ii.      The parents had raised 300,000/- for a new classroom. 500,000/- was required for a classroom. Gill said that TAS would not be able to meet the costs and suggested that local funding and CDF should be approached. (one classroom is for the present situation as they do not have enough space for splitting groups for specialist subjects.)  The question was raised that if a classroom was built then the inspectors would sanction 2 stream entry for 2011.  This would actually require 3 new classrooms by 2011.  Evans stated that the increase in pupils would mean greater income, but there was still considerable shortfall.

    1. Funding for the 3 teachers from June 2010 for 2 years. (Continuation of the contracts for the IT teacher, Solomon and one other.

Janet said the Eburru Trust had approved this application and were forwarding it to TAS.  GMA said that she thought this would be very difficult to fund.

·         Discussion for funding for the school other than TAS continued and suggestions were put forward :

·         Bonnick

·         Kengen

·         Stanbic Bank

·         Langley school  Martin Davey

·         Dr. Macharia

·         Lily asked if the trustees could approach the prospective donors as they would far more effective.

·         GMA suggested that some of the money set aside for bursaries could be vired.  Evans and Solomon both said that could not possibly be done as there was so much poverty in the area.  They cited an example of Amos coming to school with his mother.  “poverty oozed from every pore” was the description of this mother who had walked 20 miles with her son to ask the head if she could have an extension of time to find the shortfall of 6,000/- and the uniform.  Amos had the highest score of all students applying to the school.

3. Global partnership.

·         There would be 3 teachers coming next week.  Martin Davey, the Deputy Head of Langley School very committed to the project, was coming again  (self funding)  It was reported that all plans had been made and that Charles and Solomon would be I/C as Eunice was living in Gilgil and was only at the school during actual teaching hours.

4. Laptop for Solomon.

·         Janet said she had sent out a request to all shareholders for the use of a second hand one with no response.  Johnnie Morris said he would personally investigate the possibility of one from UK,

5. Lab equipment worth 100,000/-

·         Delivered by Janet, donor Dr Macharia.

       6. Books on their way.

AOB

Solomon asked if the proposal for building bricks could be funded.  It was generally thought that this proposal should be in the form of a business proposal and Charles the Business Studies Teacher should be in charge of this.

Tasks to be followed up.

·         Jointly Make a list of funding required and write proposal in order to approach donors and see if they would put their name to a particular tranch.

·         DM to follow up this application for funds to Armitage and flower farms.

·         DM to approach Mertin Davey

·         JS to follow up this application to Stanbic Bank, Bonnik, Dr Macharia.

·         Approach Kengen ?

·         JS to send spec of laptop required by Solomon to Johnnie Morris
