USUENI GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL TRUST MEETING ON 11TH FEBRUARY 2010

PREAMBLE

The meeting took place at the school and it was fourth since Usueni Trust was formed.

MINUTE 1:- OPENING REMARKS

Members present did self introduction after which Gill informed members the reasons for setting up a trust.  She said that a trust was an organization where no one is paid anything.  She went further to explain that local Trust were not there to solve problems but to work in line with the school by coming up with proposals of what the school needs.  The work of a trustee is to evaluate the school proposals and forward them to U.K for possible funding. Funds are wired into the Trusts bank Account and CASH TRANSACTIONS is discouraged. All payment are required to be made by cheque.

MINUTE 2:- APPROVAL OF PREVIOUS  MINUTES

Minutes of the third meeting held in Nairobi  were read and approved by Mr. Muthui and seconded by Ester Ngundo.

MINUTE 3:- MATTERS ARISING

EXCHANGE PROGRAM

 Gill reported that she will be in a position to locate a school in UK for an exchange program before the next meeting- May.  She however, would like to know who will be the nominated person to manage the programme. She will try to get a school in U.K. to send an application to Usueni before the elections in May, just incase the programme is stopped by the new government.

      COMMUNICATION

     Stephen and Cheruiyot will try to find out the possibility of getting

    signals to Usueni by liaising with the relevant authorities.

MINUTE 4:- REPORT ON PROGRESS ON TEACHERS RECRUITMENT

The Deputy Principal explained that three teachers were engaged in January.  One graduate and two form IV leavers who are waiting to join local universities.  The search for qualified teachers in History, Kiswahili, Chemistry and Biology is still going on.

Hellen Ndeti should be informed when the teachers leave for the college in order to stop salary transfer.

The school expects to have 140 students this year which might earn one extra government teacher.  Incase this happens, Usueni will release one T.A.S teacher and apply for re-allocation of the money in other areas.

MINUTE 5:-REPORT ON SCHOOL EXAM RESULTS

Deputy Principal reported that they were waiting for better exam results that were due in two weeks.  She went on to say that there was improvement after the injection of TAS teachers.  The number of girls with poor performance reduced thus pushing the mean grade to 3.83 up from 2.7.

The target for last year was 4.18 and they are waiting to see the result outcome.  This target is teacher driven.  Remedial teaching is in progress with a tropical timetable which starts from 7.20am up to 1.50p.m. with another two hours from 3.00p.m.  The school too holds remedial teaching in August Holiday and each student pays Kshs 1,800 for two weeks.  Gill informed members that T.A.S –UK had approved Kshs 100,000.00 for remedial teaching and the money was already in the bank.

MINUTE 6:- LIGHTING PROJECT

The school committee had evaluated tenders and selected Chafa electricals to carry out the construction.  Gill informed members that a total of Kshs 914,000.00 for solar lighting and generator has been wired into the bank.

The contractor will be paid 50% down payment and the balance upon completion.

Mark of K.W.S will bring an engineer to commission the project.

AOB

  • The school presented a proposal to take students on a trip to Rift Valley and visit various Sites.  The proposal was not very carefully costed and Gill advised them to revise it before it is forwarded to U.K. for approval and funding.
  • Gill left school leaflets behind so that they can be used to publicise T.A.S and help look for partners.
  • Library school books donated by T.A.S to be stamped for identification.
  • Deputy principal on behalf of the principal together with other members thanked Gill for all her efforts and assistance she had given to Usueni Girls

Date of the next meeting will be held on 14th May 2010 at Usueni.
