Minutes from Trustees Meeting
19/05/2010

Present:

Minutes:

MINUTES OF TRUSTEES MEETING HELD ON WED. 19TH MAY 2010 AT 4 PM.

Janet introduced Alan Bateman ex headmaster of 7 years at Pembroke School, Gilgil and also in Mombasa.  He was welcomed by Evans and invited to sit through the meeting with view to becoming a trustee.

  1. Apologies from GMA,LB,VC.DM.
  2. Minutes of meeting held Mon 3rd May 2010 were read and approved. Certified as correct by S.M and C.W
  3. Matters Arising
    1. The Laboratory Furniture. This is being completed.  The funding is hopefully successful, if not it will be paid out of the account due to the urgency of the project.
    2. Newsletter.  The school was congratulated on the newsletter. It has been sent to interested parties (donors) to keep their interest in the school. It was decided to try and produce 3 per term.
    3. Work Experience, 2 boys and 2 girls have been taken on by the lodge. This means that 2 of the top achievers are still searching for places at college.
  4. Update on funding see table attached below.

  1. PROJECTS
    1. The Laboratory looks very professional and is nearing completion. Photos on the way.
    2. The twin classroom has been started. Ksh 1,323,310.00 (without electricity, guttering or furniture)
  2. Priorities.
    1. Evans stated that after much discussion with BOG the classrooms were the priority to house the 2 stream entry.  Although dormitories were badly needed, logistically the classrooms must come first.
    2. BOG employed staff. For 2011. The Govt. should supply staff but funding will still be needed for Solomon as he has not yet got his Masters qualification.

  1. Evaluation of projects to TAS.
    1. Laboratory.  As soon as it is opened.
    2. Bursaries (end of 2010)
    3. Teacher funding (end of 2010)
    4. The analysis sheet produced by the school would be excellent evidence of the progress of the pupils and teacher performance to be sent to Gill to see if she would like to use it. Additional Information this table is taken from 56 schools. Eburru is 27 out of the 56. The best results mean are 9.4.  It must be understood that all the other schools start with a much higher base of KCPE entries.

  1. Meeting with JS and GMA in NBI.
    1. Gill explained that she was exploring the possibility of getting Equity Bank, Safaricom and KWLS to fund education using the TAS model of administration.
    2. When asked if there was any possibility for further funding from TAS for Eburru, she said there was no harm in putting a proposal. She sent greetings to all.

  1. A.O.B.
    1. Communications.  Janet asked about the e mail as sometimes when applying for funding she urgently needed answers to questions. Evans said that the secretary always opened the mails to him and any of the senior staff would answer if he was not available.
    2. Transport for sport. This was a pressing issue as transport was so expensive for the pupils to travel to football and recently netball tournaments.  It is illegal for the school to charge the pupils.  It was not viable to have their own transport. However the Govt. does pay  some money for this , but often in arrears, with an extra intake this money would increase. Other means of transport must be investigated.  Flower Farm? Heritage, (Reuben Kiritu) ?
    3. The Speech Day was held on Saturday and formal thanks were given to TAS for all the help given to the school.
    4. The netball team came 3rd in the district sports, thanks to the coaching of A. McIntyre.
    5. Simon Iomande is the Deputy Head boy and will be the Head boy in 2011. (He is a TAS funded student (photo to follow)
  2. Points needing to follow up.
    1. Scholarships for school leavers. Next year there will be several high achievers who will definitely qualify for further education.
    2. Guttering and water harvesting.
    3. Janet will be away for June, but will be answering e mails.
