NOTES OF A MEETING AT IKATHIMA PRIMARY SCHOOL ON 15 OCTOBER
2013
Present:
Principal, Deputy
Head, Chair of local trust and parent
representative, Stephen Kameti, Bob and Gill Marshall-Andrews
Also present for a short meeting afterwards were a large number
of parents, mostly mothers.
School update:
286 on roll plus 62 in the nursery.
30 candidates (22 girls and 8 boys) for KCPE but they are teaching 7 more from
other schools.
Estimated mean score 222 - down from 242 in 2012. This is lower because there is an 80%
increase in the number of candidates.
Water is a problem again.
The borehole is not operational because the pump has broken. Parents are required to bring 4 jerry cans to
the school per week from a source 10km away.
Some of the families live 20km from the school. SK to follow up with the MP.
Not all the roves are guttered. There are 3 plastic tanks which are
insufficient.
The jiko in the kitchen was not being used because its too
big. There is no food distribution now
so students bring their own lunch whereas before lunch was provided for
all. When the dormitories are in full
use the jiko will be used again for the evening meal.
Parental support is strong and the girls dormitories are
particularly welcomed.
There are 5 TSC teachers and 3 TAS supported teachers.
Projects:
The girls dormitory is finished and the bunk beds are in
place and awaiting full use in January.
The bandas are a great success. The rooves may need renovation in 5
years.
The TV and DVD will be purchased now the bandas are ready.
Fire extinguishers are necessary for the bandas.
Staff houses x5 will be considered
Water tanks for the dorms x2 will be considered by JAD.
