NOTES OF A VISIT ON 13 OCTOBER 2014 BY GILL MARSHALL-ANDREWS TO GREEN PARK NURSERY SCHOOL AND LIBRARY

School update:

The compound looked in good order, clean and well kept.  The trees are growing and the play equipment outside is functioning well.  The classrooms were clean and tidy with charts on the walls and children working hard. Some of the work of the middle class of 3 – 4 year olds was particularly impressive.

There are 10 small children on roll, 13 in the middle class and 10 in the top class.

35 children from Green Park attend Loldia Primary School.  They travel by minibus paid for by the parents.

The children’s toilets were functioning but the handbasins were not.  In the outside washing area the tap was faulty but water did come out.  The gutters seem to be working and the tanks are operational.

The smallest children need rugs on the floor.

Library

I met Simon Kemo working with an adult student on a computer.  He is employed 8 hours a day Mon – Friday partly to help with some of the teaching and outdoor activities in the school and partly to teach IT in the afternoons and evenings.  He also works on Saturday mornings with the older children – mainly sport and IT with some counselling.  He has made a huge difference to the running of the school and the library.

4 computers are running OK but 2 are not.  One may need more RAM and the other may need a mouse as the pad doesn’t work.

New classroom addition to the building

This is a large classroom well finished except for a seriously bad door and windows that have no closing fitments.  There is a large TV which is used as a DVD but there are very few DVDs.

Proposals for funding from TAS

·          Rugs for the baby classroom

·          Educational trips

·         Educational DVDs for all ages

POST MEETING NOTE

GMA met Njenga the Resident Manager and discussed various matters – water / IT /trips etc.   He said that the Friends of Green Park who put the new classroom up also intend to build a dining hall and kitchen for the school.  There is also the possibility that they will fund a borehole to serve the camp and school.
