MADOGO SECONDARY SCHOOL TRUST
NOTES OF A VISIT ON 20 JANUARY 2015 BY GILL MARSHALL-ANDREWS
AND STEPHEN KAMETI
We were met by Robert Maina Principal and Rosaniah Gwiyo
Trustee.
School update
The school had just resumed after the teachers’ strike. Students were enrolling. Boarders pay 14,000 Kes per term and day
students pay 5000 Kes per term. Many
students arrive without the necessary funds.
Sometimes it is thought they have kept the money and hope that they will
be awarded a bursary. Often its
necessary to negotiate with the parents
to pay over time.
Meeting with students
GMA and SK spent some time on their own with some of the new
Form 4 students. The things they wanted
to help them in their exams were:
·
more revision books particularly in maths and
sciences,
·
more practice external exams
·
a trip to a university and
other motivational places.
The library
We met the contractor who seemed very concerned to complete
the project to a high standard within a few weeks.
There was a discussion about inviting the MP and the County
Governor to open it.
It will have both computers and books available for
individual use including use by the parents and the community.
There is 700,000 Kes to pay on the contract when the
building is complete. The funds are in
the MSST account.
IT technician overtime
The TAS contribution towards this was 65,000 Kes which was
sent to the MSST in Feb 2014. The school contribution was 120,000 Kes.
The funds have not been paid to the school yet and as they
are about to recruit someone to be responsible for the library the money may be
diverted to part payment of a new
person. Stephen to advise on this and
timing.
Exam results
The KCSE results wont come out till early March. The headteacher is hopeful that there will be
an improvement on last year’s results.
