1.1

Introduction

All persons present introduced themselves and explained their interest in the school and their connection to TAS

1.2

Status report

Head teacher, Mr Ngui, read from a prepared report which was handed over to Gill Marshall-Andrews

Some key points:

School started in 2010

Population in 2016: 67 Girls and 59 Boys (total 126)

ECD: 39 children, of which 35 will go to St. I in January 2017

Standard I: 7 girls, 10 boys

Standard II: 12 girls, 12 boys

Standard III: 8 girls, 12 boys

Standard IV: 13 girls, 11 boys

Standard V: 8 girls, 4 boys

Standard VI: 11 girls, 16 boys

Standard VII: 8 girls, 4 boys

Drop outs in 2015-2016: 23 children, due to hunger (drought)

The school has support from 44 active parents. Parents are supporting the school in many ways:

-       Paying salaries of 4 teachers

-       Have dug pit latrines for the teachers

-       Built a mud & wattle classroom and re-thatched some class rooms

-       Employing a night watchman

-       Fenced the compound (to keep out goats and straying animals from passing herds e.g. camels)

ECD classroom with solar panels for electricity, was built through CDF funding

VIP pit latrines were built in 2016 with TAS funding (two blocks)

TAS funded an educational tour to Nakuru, earlier in 2016, which was an eye opener for many children

1.3

Plans and proposals to TAS

1.3.1

Classrooms

The school wishes to expand to include Standard VIII and have masonry classrooms

CDF has set aside funds for one classroom. Building will start before the end of 2016

In September 2016, the School Committee submitted a proposal to TAS for 2 classrooms. Three quotations were obtained. The lowest bid, KSH 1,893,582/= was selected by the committee.

Action

School to contact contractor to update the quotation with gutters for water harvesting

TAS UK will start fundraising after February 2017 Trust meeting

CDF and TAS classrooms will be built adjacent, with shared walls, rather than stand-alone classrooms (these are more expensive)

1.3.2

Text Books

School Committee already submitted a proposal, in September 2016, to TAS for text books (total KSH. 129,785 /= )

1.3.3

Educational trip to Meru National Park: two days

The Local Trust Committee developed a proposal for a two day trip, with night out. It was agreed to go for a one day trip, to reduce costs.

Action

School to write to KWS to request the use of the KWS bus and waver of entrance fees.

Submit funding proposal to TAS

Note: KWS bus is currently out of service. Fuel for the trip to be paid for by school

1.3.4

Educational Day

The school wishes to hold one or more educational days to motivate parents to send their children to school / not to withdraw them and to actively support the school. This is also an opportunity to thank and recognize parents who contribute to the school’s activities, expansion and maintenance.

Ideally, such an Educational Day would take place at the beginning of the new school year.

Note: Proposal needs to be approved at TAS Trust meeting in February 2017.. This is too late for a January 2017 Educational Day. But Educational days can be held at different times in the academic year.

1.4

AOB

1.4.1

The school representatives expressed their thanks for the support by TAS and other partners.

They confirmed that the parents will work hard to improve the school, together with all partners.

1.4.2

MP’s desk expressed appreciation about the support TAS is giving to the school. CDF will also put in more resources.

1.4.3

School and partners to explore ways of harvesting water: gutters on stone classroom buildings, find partners who provide tanks etc
