Minutes from Trustees Meeting
03/10/2016

Present:

Minutes:

TRUSTS FOR AFRICAN SCHOOLS

MINUTES OF MEETING OF TRUSTEES ON MONDAY 3 OCTOBER 2016

Present: Norma Empringham, Guy Cowley,  Ben Howland, Gill Marshall-Andrews, Johnnie Morris.

In attendance:  Tony Fitzjohn  George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust.

Apologies: Lissa Campbell, Will Jones, Steve James, Luke Morris,  Ben Taylor,  Tom Marshall-Andrews

1.Tony was welcomed to the meeting.  He spoke about how TAS’ investment in schools  around Mwingi and Kora is complementary to his work to re-generate Kora National Park.

A message from Stephen Kameti was read out.  He sent best wishes and  thanked trustees for their hospitality whilst he was over for the party.

2.  Minutes of meeting on 9 May 2016  were agreed.

3.   10th anniversary party

The party was deemed to have been a great success.  The safari raised £3500 (John Spiers was the highest bidder) and the film was well received. (Thank you, Will, for both of these).  And thank you to Ben T for arranging the wonderful venue.

The party was an opportunity to say thank you to our supporters and to celebrate TAS’ achievements.

3.  Schools update

Gill reported on the progress of projects in schools.  The two girl’s dormitories are almost complete at Mitamysi and Jarajara.  The balance of funds are ready to send to the new accounts which have been set up by the secretaries Hellen Ndeti and David Kombe.  The status of these new accounts was discussed in the light of new banking regulations in Kenya.

The 3 classroom block at Eburru Primary is complete and fully paid for.  The next block of 3 classrooms will hopefully be started when the MP and Clifford Dann of HSK have formally agreed to share the cost with TAS.

Following the departure of Joan Dickie, Loldia School Trust has a new job - share secretary – Ben and Wanja Arentz who live on Green Park.  This is excellent news.  The girls toilet block has been finished.  Johnnie reported that access to water is still a problem for the school.  Hopefully the local trust will pursue this.

4.  Finance and fund raising

Guy presented the income analysis for 2012 to date.

The last 12 months have been a time of transition to new schools so income and expenditure have been lower than usual.

For the first time we have insufficient funds for projects that are ready to go.  We have around £30k in the bank and projects to the value of £60 that are ready.   Every effort will be made to broaden our donor base.  Trustees agreed to search for new individuals who might be likely to offer support.

Guy and Gill are assembling data required by donors which hopefully will demonstrate that the investment in schools has yielded positive outcomes.

5.  Marathon

Lissa succeeded in her marathon yesterday.  She got round in 4 hours and 30 minutes and raised £1000 each for TAS and Just a Drop.  Congratulations!

6.  Proposals for funding

Proposals to the value of £25k were discussed and agreed for immediate funding.  A further £4500 is expected soon so projects to a total of £30k will be funded now.   If and when further funding is acquired projects at Kaseluni  and  Eburru Primary schools will be funded.

7.  Next meeting   Many thanks to Ben H for the meeting room and refreshments at Kingly Street

The next meeting will be on Monday  20 or Tuesday 21  February 2017 6.00 pm at  Luke’s office (to be confirmed)
