Minutes from Trustees Meeting
23/04/2018

Present:

Minutes:

TRUSTS FOR AFRICAN SCHOOLS

MINUTES OF MEETING OF TRUSTEES ON MONDAY 23 APRIL 2018 AT ERNST AND YOUNG 25 CHURCHILL PLACE CANARY WHARF.

Present:  Norma Empringham,  Guy Cowley,  Luke Morris,  Ben Taylor, Steve James, Will Jones,  Gill Marshall-Andrews

Apologies:   Ben Howland, Tom Marshall-Andrews, Johnnie Morris, Douglas Pinto, Lissa Campbell.

1.   Minutes of meeting on 15 January were agreed.

2.  Schools update:

Report from Stephen Kameti (previously circulated) was discussed.  Also the final report to The Waterloo Foundation which provides a comprehensive schools update.

The two Conservation Days were a huge success – one at Boka on the eastern border of Kora and one at Mitamysi on the western side.  Both new Governors attended the events and it is clear that there is a real head of steam for conservation building up now.

3.  Funding

Guy reported that KWS had re-imbursed us around £3600. We expect that they have retained funds enough to pay Stephen’s salary, gratuity and insurance till the end of his contract in June. This money has been, or will shortly be, transferred to Stephen to re-imburse him for the unpaid  field expenses from 2015 to the end of his current contract in May 2018.

GMA confirmed that we need to look at new funding sources.  Lissa is in the process of applying to 6 trusts, GMA will apply to the Guernsey Overseas Aid Commission  and will make a new application to the Property Race Day.

Will Jones said that Journeys by Design /Wild Philanthropy may be in a position to consider support in the future.  He offered a conversation with a new person being employed by WP to raise funds.

The Waterloo Foundation are considering further funding for Stephen’s post and for an environmental project at Kaseluni.

BenT offered to research E&Y Foundation and possibly arrange a meeting with one of the trustees.

Luke will investigate the Fladgate Foundation.

Other donors will be approached in due course.

4.  Proposals for funding

Projects to the value of £4,800 were agreed with some funds to be delayed for more detail.

Further projects to the value of £71k were agreed in principle with money to be sent as funding allows.

5.  Debate Mate

Debate mate have failed to raise funds for the TAS schools project in August.  They are asking us if we can help find their share of the funding.  Trustees agreed we are not in a position to do so.  So sadly this may now not happen.

6.  Stephen Kameti’s visit

Stephen is coming over 4 -30 July.  He will stay with GMA and attend the next TAS trustees meeting.  He will also visit The Waterloo Foundation in Cardiff and hopefully some of the  UK schools which have had partnerships with Kenyan schools.  He will spend part of his time in Northern Ireland with friends who are funding his flights.

7.  Next meeting   Many thanks to Ben for the wonderful meeting room and refreshments at E&Y.

The next meeting will be at Ben H’s office 5 Kingley Street at 6pm on Thursday 5 July 2018.
