Minutes from Trustees Meeting
05/07/2018

Present:

Minutes:

TRUSTS FOR AFRICAN SCHOOLS

MINUTES OF MEETING OF TRUSTEES ON THURSDAY 5 JULY 2018 AT 6 KINGLY STREET.

Present:  Norma Empringham,  Guy Cowley,  Steve James,  Ben Howland,  Douglas Pinto, Gill Marshall-Andrews

Apologies:   Lissa Campbell, Will Jones, Tom Marshall-Andrews, Johnnie Morris, Luke Morris, Ben Taylor.

In attendance:  Stephen Kameti

1.  Welcome to Stephen Kameti.

2.   Minutes of meeting on 23 April were agreed.

3.  Schools update:

Stephen gave a PP presentation of TAS activity to date.  They particularly valued the ‘talking heads’ – a young mother from Usueni who had been given a second chance and a headteacher .  Stephen’s  schools’ update had been previously circulated and was discussed.  Trustees thanked him for his great work for TAS in schools and communities around Kora.  He is a trusted and well liked ambassador for us.

4.  Funding

Lissa has made 4 applications to trusts for projects ‘ready to go’.  Gill has applied to Guernsey Overseas Aid Commission.   She has written to other long standing donors and we await results.

The Waterloo Foundation has promised £10k per year for 3 years to cover Stephen’s salary which should arrive next week.  They have also indicated an interest in the Kaseluni environmental project and we are hopeful they will contribute to that.

There was a discussion about fund raising.  Douglas indicated that there were possible avenues to explore in Nairobi if a suitable document or video could be prepared. Stephen, Doulas and Gill will liaise about this.

The video needs to tell the TAS story, maybe using past and current students, teachers, parents, community members, governors etc.

5.  Proposals for funding

Projects to the value of £1640 were agreed.

Further projects to the value of £91k were agreed in principle with money to be sent as funding allows. (See attached projects for funding document)

6.  Second hand laptop for Stephen.  Trustees were asked if they knew of a source of second hand laptops.  Stephen is desperate for a replacement for his ailing/aging machine.

7.  Next meeting   Many thanks to Ben for the wonderful meeting room and refreshments at London Wealth Management.

The next meeting will be on Thursday 20 September 2018 at a venue to be confirmed.
