School update:

The school only has 19 candidates for KCPE this year – down from 35 last year.

The mean score last year was very low – 163.  This year’s candidates are of higher calibre so the score is expected to increase.  GMA asked if some poorer potential candidates had been dropped in order to increase the score but HT said this was not the case.  The drop in numbers was due to a smaller cohort.

The printer funded by TAS was in use and the teachers were very happy with it.  It saves them having to travel to Garissa – 6 hours by road – to get teaching and exam materials copied.

The books funded by TAS have also arrived and are in use.

The exam candidates have to go to Madogo – near Garissa – to sit their exams which is costly for their families and the school.  It is hoped that next year Asako will be designated an exam centre so this does not have to happen.

GMA noted that the fence was broken down and the staff quarters have still not been repaired.  The school has received 5 new teachers from Kilifi to replace the local staff previously in place.  The new teachers seemed very keen and able.  They accepted the need to pay rent for their housing so as to ensure that the buildings can be maintained.  The HT has promised to make this happen and to repair the fence.

The school expects to receive 60 students for Standard 1 in January – up from 35 last year.

The school manages 4 ECD centres, including one over the river.

UNICEF have promised more beds, mattresses, sports equipment and water filters.

The school will raise proposals for an educational trip and benchmarking.

Next meeting:  End January 2018
