Minutes:

Report from Trustees of Loldia Primary School Trustees

Ben and Wanja Arentz

  • Water harvesting at the administration building.

Builder Mbugua has finished the project (within the agreed budget) and it is looking good. See photos. Because of the old part of the building being a bit lower than the new extension, the water lines connecting the various gutters had to be led via ground level to the water collecting (10,000 liter) tank. In the future, if we manage to upgrade the roofing of the old part of the admin building to the same standard as that of the extension, this height difference will be rectified and all water will flow through connecting gutters to the water tank.

The good news is that the new water tank is already full with rain water, ready for consumption.

  • Grass planting of the big playing field.

The big playing field had been used for dumping soil excavated by the contractor doing the tarmacking of the roads in Kasarani. This resulted in the big field covered in dry soil (very dusty) and lots of plastic waste. Through Diana Low and Loldia House, we were given a contribution of Ksh 40,000 to try and get grass planted on the field.

We got the school children organized to clean up the field by removing all the plastic waste within view.

We then ordered three truck loads of grass seedlings/cuttings from Eburru and the same schoolchildren planted these as a project. Each class was assigned an area to take care of and they did that with much fun and a competitive spirit.

Luckily we are still enjoying rains at Kasarani (unusual for this time of the year) which shall help the

grass seedlings/cuttings to develop fast and hopefully cover the entire area quickly.

The grass deliveries cost 3 x Ksh 15,000 to a total of Ksh 45,000, slightly more than the contribution made. The difference has been absorbed by the small surplus we have in our Loldia funds account.

The MCA of Kasarani has pledged help and funding but we could not wait for that to happen, given the political nature of this help initiative (insisting on newspaper reporters and photographers on site to witness the whole event.)

If it ever happens we can always fill in grass where there are gaps.

  • World Bank Provided filtered water

As far as we can see, nothing has happened on that subject. Despite all the positive feedback, the filter unit is still not connected to a water source.

More good news is that the (TAS funded) water harvesting projects completed earlier at LPS, have all their tanks full with rain water from the prolific rains we have experienced. That water is literally a God send, in a village which has been cut off from water supplies due to damage to water lines created by the builders of the roads. The entire village is now dependent on water trucks delivering water at a commercial price. At least the school children at LPS have free access to plenty perfectly clean water. What a blessing!

As for new projects, we will get back to you all once we have had a meeting of Trustees for LPS, upon the return of Diana Low from overseas.
