Minutes:
TRUSTS FOR AFRICAN
SCHOOLS
MINUTES OF ANNUAL
GENERAL MEETING OF TRUSTEES
ON MONDAY 7 OCTOBER
2019
AT FLADGATE, 16 GREAT QUEEN STREET.
Present: : Lissa
Campbell, Guy Cowley, Norma Empringham, Will Jones,
Gill Marshall-Andrews, Tom
Marshall-Andrews, Johnnie Morris, , Luke Morris, Ben Taylor
Apologies: Douglas Pinto,
1. Minutes
of meeting on 29 April 2019 were agreed.
2. Trustees and officers
Norma Empringham was re-elected to the Chair unanimously.
Guy Cowley was elected as Treasurer unanimously. Ben Taylor will retain responsibility for
arranging the audit of accounts.
Gill Marshall-Andrews was re-elected as Secretary
unanimously.
Steve James met GMA last week and offered his resignation
as a trustee. He feels he is unable to
attend too many meetings.
2. Schools update
Stephen Kameti’s
update on the Mwingi/ Kora schools was discussed. A copy
is on the website. Of particular
note are the emergency staff house at Mitamysi, the kitchen, desks and chairs
at Kora, the near completion of the
sixth classroom at Kaseluni, the
renovation of staff quarters at Asako (by the school), and the ongoing Forest Schools pilot project
at Kaseluni. Also noted is that all the
schools are embarking on tree planting programmes, even without fencing, and
that the numbers of exam candidates continues to rise, specially for girls.
Trustees asked for SK to be congratulated on his report
and specifically for the strap line at the bottom of each page.
Johnnie gave an update on Loldia and GMA outlined new
proposals at Eburru Primary.
3. Funding
GMA reported that the funds from the Property Race Day (
approx £42k) are likely to come in very shortly. Luke has agreed to attend the cheque
distribution event in November as GMA is away.
We hope to hear soon from St James Place Foundation about
our application for £10k for Eburru Primary.
Lissa has some ideas about further applications and will
discuss with GMA and Rafela Fitzhugh.
4. Proposals for funding
Projects at Mitamysi and Eburru were agreed to the value
of £52k. Funds will be sent whenever
they are received.
5. Partnerships
Lissa outlined the possibility of a partnership between
Kaseluni Primary School and African Sand
Dams Foundation. The school community
has begun to assemble sand and hardcore for a large new tank which could be
built on the same lines as at Mitamysi.
The school is very excited about this prospect.
6. Next meeting will be on Thursday 9 January
2020 at Ben T’s office, Ernst and Young, 1 More London with the
possibility of supper afterwards.
7. Post meeting note: Douglas Pinto is currently arranging for the
Karui accounts to be audited in Nairobi.
Thank you very much Douglas! Its
a lot of work and we are very grateful.
