Minutes from Trustees Meeting

Minutes:

Note of a meeting at Loldia Primary School on

31 October 2019

Present:

Kennedy Kariuki  HT (for some of the time), Diana Low, Wanja-Gituru Arentz, Ben Arentz, Gill Marshall-Andrews

This was a quick meeting as the KCPE exams were going on.

The HT was incoherent – possibly drunk.

The grass on the school playing field is growing slowly but there has been little rain.  The litter and weeds have been cleared.

The water situation remains unsatisfactory and opaque.

This is the situation as far as we can understand.

There are 4 sources of water to the school.

The water harvesting is going on well  and some water tanks are full.  However  the gutters are blocked and need to be cleared.  The HT agreed to do this some time ago but nothing has been done.

Shalimar.  The school used to receive plentiful water free from the Shalimar supply to the village on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays until the road was built 3 years ago. This was pumped from the lake. The road builders broke the pipes and the new pipes they installed to remedy the situation are of much smaller bore.   This means that the pressure is too low to reach the tanks and taps in the school so this source is currently no good.

Borehole in the village -

The CDF (or possibly the County MCA) have piped water from the community borehole to the school but this water must be paid for.  It is understood that the HT does not pay so no water comes from this source for washing, latrines etc.

The World Bank kiosk also uses water from the borehole and pays the CDF for this.  They have piped water to a tank with a filtration unit which provides 2 x 5k Litres of drinking water per day?  It is also supposed to feed another 10k litre tank which is apparently too high, so a lower overflow tank is required.

NB none of this is clear to the writer who is losing the will to live!

Some possible solutions may be :

Contact Shalimar and ask them to re-install the wider pipes that originally ran to the school or find out if TAS can re-run the bigger pipes.  Get an estimate etc.

Get an overflow tank so more of the World Bank water can be stored.

Ensure that the HT pays for the CDF water that is available for latrines, washing.
