School update

The school roll stands at 272 – including 25 new students in Standard 1.  Slightly more boys than girls.

Class 8 candidates for 2023 are 26.

Exam results mean score:

2021  178

2022   242.  This is a huge improvement.  Apparently the low score in 2021 was due to the fact that candidates had to travel to Madogo for their exam and many did not want to travel.

The target for 2023 is 250.

Teachers:  7 TSC  (6 for primary school and one for Class Junior Secondary)  They expect more secondary teachers to be appointed to cover the new CBD curriculum for Class 7.

PTA pay for one teacher.  8k per month.

Buildings and water

The refurbishment of classrooms was an improvement but the floors are still in a bad state.

The fence was brilliant – far above expectations!

(Post meeting note:  It appears that the community have not done their part in this project so the contractor is out of pocket.  This is troubling.  SK to decide whether or not to intervene in this matter.)

The staff quarters are much improved.  The teachers pay 500 per month and this sum is applied to remedial works.  The system seems to be working at last!

The borehole is functioning for the secondary school but not yet for the primary school.

They currently get water from an older borehole that does not deliver water reliably and is not of a good quality.

The gutters have been taken down on all the buildings and some of the water tanks seem to have disappeared.  The school would obviously like access to the new borehole water but we said we wanted to save rainwater if and when it arrives so they must connect the gutters before TAS will fund a  connection to the new borehole.  A new tank up to 5 meters high to serve the school and the garden they are starting will be required and a proposal for this should be prepared.
