Minutes from Trustees Meeting
07/02/2023

Present:

Minutes:

NOTES OF A VISIT TO EL RAR PRIMARY SCHOOL – 7 FEBRUARY 2023

Present:

Mr Marc  DH,  Mr Joshua Orobo  Class 7 English,  Mr Wanjala  Class 4,  Mr James  Class 3,  Madam  Rahema  PP1 And PP2,  Lucy Fitzjohn  GAWPT,  Stephen Kameti  GAWPT/TAS,  Gill Marshall-Andrews  TAS UK.

Apologies:

Mr Shoka  Class 2,  Mr Benjamin ??  HT,  Madam  Kjadija  RE and BOM teacher.

School update:

The numbers on roll are very low – total 68 including 21 girls.

PP1 2 children,  PP2  8 children.

7 TSC teachers and 1 BOM.  A very big problem is accommodation for teachers.  There is really nowhere for them to stay.

Discussion:

There was a long discussion about why the school is not thriving and why the community is not supportive of the school.  Points made:

Muslim leaders prevent children joining the ECD because they have to learn the DUQS  before they can enrol in normal education.

Children may be allowed into school when there is milk but they leave when there is not.

Language is a problem because the community generally don’t speak Swahili or English.

Very few of the local population are educated so role models are few.

Ways to encourage children into school and to stay there:

Education days,

Monthly ‘party’ for those who attend school regularly.

New TV to show films – old TV is broken

Benchmarking to give inspiration and experience of a good school.

Educational trip to widen experiences.

Projects for funding

The banda funds will be vired to other smaller projects – above – as there is no point in investing in another building when the school is failing.  The teachers wanted a printer very badly and this will be considered.

TAS and GAWPT will approach the Governor/ County Minister of Education and the MP about the situation.
