NOTE OF A VISIT TO MITAMYSI SECONDARY SCHOOL ON 8 FEBRUARY 2023

Present:

Julius Mwangi Wanyoike  HT,  Acothy Ndoo  BOM,  Albert Wambua DH,  Lucy Fitzjohn  GAWPT,  Stephen Kameti  GAWPT / TAS,  Gill Marshall-Andrews TAS.

Introductions

GMA introduced Lucy.  She said that TAS would be winding down over the course of the next 18 months but that GAWPT would be taking an interest in schools as part of their outreach programme.

School update.

The school is reviving after a serious management failure caused it to close for a year in 2021.  It started up again in 2022 with a new Form 1.

Form 2  now has 37 students and Form 1 is currently enrolling with around 40 expected.

There are 5 TSC teachers  and 2 BOM teachers who can now cover the whole curriculum except for geography.

There are 6 classrooms, one science lab, boys and girls dormitories.

Projects for funding

Funding is in place for a library, a dining hall and a trip.  These projects will be implemented when it is clear that the school is thriving again.  A trip will be arranged when the Form 1 students have enrolled.

Post meeting note

GMA is concerned that the teachers are not utilizing their time well in the current situation with only 2 classes instead of 4.  It would be helpful to split the classes into 2 and teach on a rota basis so teachers taught  groups of around 20  4 times a day instead of  teaching 40 children only twice.

SK will be asked to suggest this!
