A new library and upgraded classrooms for Ikathima
20/04/2015

This remote primary school was struggling to survive 6 years ago.  The few classrooms were crumbling, water was collected from a borehole 5 km away, the numbers of children on roll varied from month to month and teacher morale was low. Now we see a thriving school, with   running water, solar power, good quality classrooms, a library / computer room, dormitories, staff houses, fencing, gardens, trees and an expanding roll.

Girls in particular are staying on to take their leaving exams and doing well enough to go on to secondary school.

The latest  infrastructure project completed by TAS with support from the Foyle Foundation is the renovation of 3 crumbling classrooms put up 10 years ago by another NGO and the creation of a library.  It is likely to be the last major project for this school as TAS moves on to support new schools in the area.
