Forest Schools Pilot project gets going at Kaseluni
05/04/2019

Forest Schools is a new project designed to create tree plantations in schools in the very arid area around Kora National Park and Mwingi National Reserve.  The idea is to fence school compounds, acquire a reliable water supply, educate and inspire the whole school community and employ a tree caretaker for 2 years to get the trees firmly established. The pilot project is getting going at Kaseluni Primary School.

The sturdy fence is almost complete, parents and the local community have been sensitised, children have been instructed, holes have been dug and some tree seedlings acquired. As ever, water is the limiting factor.  Tanks and guttering are in place on all the new buildings so when it rains there will be a supply for drinking, washing and maybe some for watering trees.  But a better supply is needed and talks are being held with the County Government, with Kenya Wildlife Service and with the local MP to address the situation.Progress on this project will be monitored carefully with a view to replicating it if it proves successful.
