Ikathima Primary School re-furbishment programme is nearly complete. With new roofs, new floors, new windows, new walls the classrooms are almost unrecognisable. They will be ready for the start of the new school year in January when around 320 children are expected to enrol including 150 girls.
Great efforts are being made to retain the girls in school. Traditionally they drop out as they approach puberty and few of them take the KCPE, Kenyan Certificate of Primary Education at the end of Standard 8. New girls toilets and hand washing facility have been built by German Agro Action ( see pictures left of old and new toilets) and TAS is hoping to fund the salary and accommodation of 2 female teachers. Other measures to encourage girls to complete their primary education are under discussion.
